CHRIS MURPHY

A SOUTH Coast man who obtained a dog from Bega pound and used it as shark bait has been fined $300 in Bega Local Court for cruelty.

Police attended the wharf at Tathra where they saw the carcass of the dog with a number of large fishing hooks passing through it floating in the water. It was attached to the dock by a steel cable and nylon rope which were linked to a 10-litre sealed drum used as a float.

A 36-year-old man admitted to police he had obtained the dog on the morning of July 13.

He shot the dog at the wharf car park with an unlicensed pistol he said he had bought for $500 for shooting sharks. He had cut a 25cm hole in the stomach of the carcass.

On other charges relating to the incident the man was fined $1,500 and placed on a three-year bond.
